How can the tank be used?

Because the load has been adjusted to simulate that which ones see in a rowing, the tank can not only be used for steady-state technique work in the Utilization range (U2 and U1) but can also be used for workouts in the Anaerobic Threshold  range (AT), the Transportation (T) range, but cannot be used AN+ (short pieces of less then 1 minute or racing starts). Since the athletes are power source just like in a boat then they are in full control over the water rotation and benefit fully from the tank session.

What are the most common sizes?

  • 8-Station, Sculling/Sweep: 49.5′ by 20.5′ excluding perimeter aisles;
  • 16-Station, Sweep-only: 54′ by 26′ including a center access aisle, excluding perimeter aisles.

Other sizes are available upon request as the tanks are modular.

Does the indoor rowing tank require power?

Artificial rotation of water (pumped powered tanks) not only requires expensive energy but results in a stroke that no matter how fast the water looks, it feels heavy. This is due to the large mass of water resisting against the athletes drive as well as the larger reservoir needed for the pumps, which results in much higher drag. This is unlike that which is experienced in the boat. In the boat, the load changes as the boat pick up velocity, so that from the catch to the finish a racing shell load becomes lighter and the hands must accelerate to keep up with the increasing speed of the boat. Not so in a pump powered tank, where the athletes are stuck in a heavy, mass of relative static water moving at a constant velocity. The athlete powered tank is geared to offset the difference in drag between a tank versus a boat. In addition, water used in our design is kept to a minimum as a result due to scaling such that it load feels more akin to that of a racing shell and more lively and responsive to the athletes’ power, then a powered tank could ever be.

The tank room will require lighting, HVAC to control the humidity and temperature in the room, single phase 110/220 volts depending on the country.

Under 2 KW per hour operation on water treatment (20 amp service), powering monitoring feedback devices such as video cameras, monitors or projection units, computers used to display or store monitoring data or force measurement instrumentation. Our designs do not require large power requirements and related operating and maintenance cost of mechanically pumped tanks. The water and sewer expense is less with the Dreher Tanks as the reservoir of water needed with our design is considerably less than other tank designs.

How much does a Dreher Indoor Rowing Tank cost?

There are a variety of factors involved in the pricing of our Indoor Rowing Tanks, specifically: Size, configuration, and location are the primary drivers of the cost. For this reason, it is important for us to create a custom quote for each customer as each project will have varying criteria. We can safely say that our athlete powered tank is the most cost-effective indoor rowing tank on the market, both from a capital cost and an ongoing operating cost.

How long does the installation take?

Typically our installations take 5 to 7 days for a 2-pool 8-station, sweep and sculling or a 16-station, sweep only. However, since we offer different length pools in varying configurations that timeline can fluctuate moderately. In addition, there can sometimes be delays due to site preparation prior to our team of installation technicians arriving. Our team of technicians work efficiently and strive to complete the installation within a one week period and avoid a second mobilization.

Do you provide any ongoing support or service plan?

Yes. We stock replacement parts or can make replacement tank oars or sculls quickly. If your tank is impacted by a major natural disaster or mishap (flood, fire, etc.) or just need an update or refurbishment, we quote that on a case by case basis and will conduct the repair on an expedited basis if needed. In one case we had a two-person team pull out a tank (i.e., two pools) from a recess that had been damaged in a flood and repair all cracks, replace all hardware and re-coat to the inner surface, so that the tank looked brand new upon completion of the repair.

Do we have an installation team that can come to conduct major repairs?

We have had customers impacted by floods, storm surges, fires, etc. and can help conduct the entire repair. We try to use at least one of the same people that installed your tank or at least people who installed other tanks like yours.

What if we need to relocate a tank to a new building is that possible?

We ask that future customer to think about removal when the tank is installed both with the present location and the future location, with the correct sized door so as to not have to completely disassemble the tank to facilitate relocation. Our same installation will make the relocation as seamless as possible. If some disassembly is required then that can be done to reassemble the tank to make it perform and look as it did before relocation and for an additional charge can be upgraded at the same time.

Are there any safety concerns with an indoor rowing tank?

Keeping the water clean and the floor dry should be priorities of any rowing program. The tank is generally dry except when teaching novices. A result of proper rowing technique will be a dry floor.

If you intend to provide a pump powered filtration system you would at the time of the system installation have to ground each separate weldment line. You should double check the electrical codes in each locality for the specifics required.
